Inside the W.E.L.L. Summit: An Interview with Steaz CEO Linda Barron

Steaz Cactus Water 1

Welcome back to Inside the W.E.L.L. Summit, where we take you behind the scenes of our wellness weekend, giving you a peak into the minds of prominent members of our Tribe. Today, Linda Barron, CEO of Fair-Trade beverage company Steaz, is sharing a little with us about the company’s latest innovation: Cactus Water. Yep, that prickly pear seed oil everyone has been telling you to look for in your skincare this year has now shown up in your drink. Here’s why.

It seems like organic cactus water is the new wave in hydration. What are the top health benefits of cactus water taken internally vs. putting on our skin (like we’ve seen lots of in the last year)?

Steaz Cactus Water is the new wave in hydration because it is a ready-to-drink product loaded with all-natural health benefits and great taste. The prickly pear cactus was a relatively unknown ingredient in the U.S. until recently but contains a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It reduces inflammation, and is ultra-hydrating. It’s an ingredient that fights free radicals and improves cell function.

What does it taste like?

Steaz Cactus Water, made from the prickly pear cactus fruit, has a berry-like flavor that is combined with organic green tea and natural flavors to create a refreshing beverage that’s delicious, but not too sweet. It comes in three great flavors: Steaz Cactus Water with Green Tea; Steaz Cactus Water with Cucumber & Green Tea; and Steaz Cactus Water with Starfruit & Green Tea.

How do you choose what to pair cactus water with in your infusions?

The prickly pear cactus has a unique, berry-like taste that, when blended with green tea, bursts with flavor on its own. That said, when we were coming up with the final recipe for Steaz Cactus Water, we tested many different fruit combinations and love the benefits and complimentary flavors of both cucumber and starfruit. It can be paired with anything and enjoyed at any time. It’s great for maintaining hydration both inside and out and can be enjoyed pre-workout or post-workout or anytime throughout the day instead of reaching for a soda or sugary beverage.

Steaz Cactus Water 2

Why did cactus water feel like a natural progression to add to your line of fair trade, organic green tea infusions?

Steaz has always been a forward-thinking, innovative brand, and our new Cactus Water line is a great example of that. Cactus Water has many nutritional properties, giving you a product that not only tastes great but has great benefits as well. It furthers our mission of creating healthy and delicious drinks that are good for the mind, body and soul.

Furthermore, the foundation of creating products with organic and fair trade ingredients sourced globally and sustainably, is at the core of our company. Our loyal fan base knows that we are both a leader and an innovator in the industry, constantly coming out with new products to invigorate the market place.

Thank you, Linda! Linda will be joining the W.E.L.L. Summit on our Fair Trade panel. With more than 15 years of executive level experience in Fortune 1000 companies, Linda Barron joined Steaz® as CFO in 2008. She demonstrated a strong understanding of the organic beverage market and a passion for further developing the company’s triple bottom line business philosophy of people, planet and ethical profitability. After establishing a track record of success in just over five years of leadership, Linda was appointed CEO in October 2013.

In her time as CEO, Linda has led the company through its most successful and profitable years yet, an increase in net sales, new distribution and double-digit organic growth. With Linda’s guidance, the company has successfully launched new innovation and has met or exceeded every key performance metric.

Inside the W.E.L.L. Summit: What to Expect From Sacred Beauty Salon

SacredBeauty_NYC2

Welcome back to Inside the W.E.L.L. Summit, where we give you a behind-the-scenes peek at what our speakers are thinking, what sessions are all about and what you can expert from the Summit, coming up in October. Today, we’re hearing from natural beauty expert and makeup artist Rebecca Casciano, one of our speakers. Here’s what she has to say about why you should attend her session!

A year and a half ago, I launched Sacred Beauty Salon Series, an intimate group workshop that explores the relationship between inner and outer beauty. As a makeup artist, health coach, spiritual seeker and someone who has struggled with my share of skin issues, I have come to understand the connection between beauty and wellness firsthand. On my journey, I have learned powerful practices and tools that have empowered me and my clients towards deeper self-love and true beauty. Through Sacred Beauty Salon, I share these methods with you, offering guidance, support, love and community.

In each Sacred Beauty Salon workshop, we tap into the heart of how we feel about ourselves through engaging group conversations and self-reflective exercises. It is a safe, sacred space for us access some of our innermost thoughts and feelings, which can be transformative in itself. Sharing our stories collectively reminds us that we are not alone, which is encouraging and heart-warming, The genuine connections that occur in such a short period of time is just extraordinary.

Next, we move into our outer expression of beauty, through the art of makeup. We learn how makeup can be used as a medium for self-love, expression and creativity, rather than a mundane chore or something to cover our true selves. I demonstrate a makeup application and offer practical tips for choosing the right colors, techniques and products that are better for our skin, health and the planet. You will have the opportunity to try the green beauty favorites I use for my Thoughtfully magazine editorials, private clients and more!

Last year, I had the pleasure and honor of leading three Breakout Sessions at the W.E.L.L. Summit. I created a custom workshop based on Sacred Beauty Salon’s core inner beauty exercises. We had a wonderful time exploring ideas that helped us to redefine the way we see beauty in others and in turn, ourselves. Even though there was no makeup involved, I was thrilled with how many women showed up and afterwards raved about how unique the experience was.

SacredBeauty_LA

For this year’s W.E.L.L. Summit, I’m so excited to share that I will be returning and expanding my Breakout Sessions into two parts! This will allow us to more fully explore both inner and outer beauty in our time together. In “Sacred Beauty Salon: How To Love Yourself From The Inside,” we will work through limiting beliefs about our beauty, reawaken our self-love and uplift one another along the way. We will also play with some of the best clean makeup on the planet, learning valuable tips and getting inspired to approach our beauty routine with more love, care and creativity.

W.E.L.L. Summit Tribe, I cannot wait to share the magic that is Sacred Beauty Salon with you! If you’re still not sure it’s for you or would like to hear from my guests, check out the lovely Sarita Coren’s post and read some of the guests’ testimonials. I so look forward to welcoming you into the Sacred Beauty Circle in my hometown, New York City!

Rebecca Casciano is a makeup artist, natural beauty expert and Sacred Beauty Coach. Her mission is to help women discover the connection between our inner health and outer beauty. For over 15 years, she has worked as a celebrity and fashion makeup artist, helping hundreds of models and clients look their best. She strives to bring this intention to each person who sits in her chair, attends one of her events or reads an article she’s written.

Inside The W.E.L.L. Summit: An Attendee’s Perspective

Welcome back to Inside the W.E.L.L. Summit where we take you behind the scenes of the best wellness event of the year. Today, we’re giving you a sneak peek into what last year’s gathering was like, from an attendee herself. Read on to see why This Organic Girl is coming back for more in 2016—and bringing her sister along for the ride!

So listen, I’m no health expert by any means. I’m just a mama and a woman trying to live this life in the healthiest way possible. I am passionate about making healthy choices, eating clean and keeping a safe, nontoxic household for me and my boys. I am always learning and I enjoy meeting and making connections with others who share the same passions.

Having two toddlers at home means that often these connections happen online and mostly through social media. This is great and I have made some awesome friends this way but when I saw an ad for the W.E.L.L Summit happening in Boston in October 2015, it caught my eye. I asked around and since it was an inaugural event, no one really knew anything about it. I decided to take a chance on it and I’m so glad I did!

Let me just start by saying I went to this conference not knowing ANYONE. I am equally as introverted as I am extroverted so sometimes I do great in these situations but sometimes it is really easy for me to feel awkward and excluded.

I’ve also been to several professional conferences in the past for my part-time work as an American Sign Language interpreter and right away I noticed there were some major pros about the structure and flow of the W.E.L.L Summit to help alleviate any first-timer’s anxiety. First, the summit speakers were crazy curated. I really had no idea at the time the caliber of speakers I had the privilege of listening to but we are talking revered leaders in a breath of topics from green beauty to fitness to ethical shopping to clean eating and more. They were not only successful professionals in their respective fields but they were able to speak informatively, take questions and also manage an audience, which is not easy to do!

Within an hour all of my nervousness fell to the wayside. Workshops are scheduled back to back and the whole day is structured with talks, coffee and snack breaks, panels, meals and social time built in at the end of the day. What I really loved was the sessions were kept small and capped at 30-35 people. A great size to encourage questions, make connections and watch demos.

Two of my favorite sessions were “Soap Making” with Tara Pelletier, owner of Meow Meow Tweet and “A Three Minute Face” makeup application tips with Kristen Arnett, a green makeup artist with more than 15 years of professional experience and founder of GreenBeautyTeam.com. A year later I am still using a bunch of her tips!

Sessions were loaded with practical tips and applications. Like I left with a bar of soap that I not only watched being made but I got to touch, smell and talk about sourcing for all of its ingredients. And I found out I only need to apply foundation around my nose and not my whole face?! I made a ton of connections and left with an amped up sense motivation for blogging. Plus I came home with Chef Ariane Resnick’s The Bone Broth Miracle cookbook with a ton of inspiration on how to incorporate bone broth on the daily. And not to mention the LARGE goodie bag I took home with samples galore from organic teas and spices to nontoxic fragrances and deodorants.

That weekend stays with me and I know I am not the only one. I’ve attended a book club recently that has W.E.L.L. Summit roots. At the book club, one of the girls there described the W.E.L.L. Summit as a time in her life where she felt most “in flow.” I thought that was a great way to describe what I was feeling too. I was so engaged with participants and speakers about topics that really spoke to my core. I left feeling so refreshed and excited and the first thing I did afterwards was call my sister who lives in Florida and told her she is coming with me to W.E.L.L Summit 2016. So she is and we will both be rollin’ up in true VIP style—I mean when there is a VIP option at checkout that includes an additional gift bag… a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. Here are a few thoughts from my sis, Amy Gaul on what she’s excited about:

“My sister’s five star review from last year’s Summit left me intrigued! This year I jumped at the chance to attend and participate in this immersive and inspiring experience.”

Last year I attended one day out of this two-day conference and only got the chance to see a handful of the speakers. This year I am all-in and I’m really looking forward to the lineup. Especially excited to see celebrity chef Amie Valpone of TheHealthyApple.com tell her personal story and talk about how to detox, fight inflammation and get your body working for you in stead of against you. Also looking forward to Melissa Cantor, co-founder of shopethica.com talk about how to make best decisions when purchasing sustainable fashion. I have a specific question about recycled plastics in fabrics that I am dying to ask! Also I won’t be missing Ksenia Avdulova from Breakfast Criminals talk about growing your brand—I missed her talk last year so I am super psyched she is coming back again.

I’m counting down the days—who’s with me?!

She blogs and muses about her newfound lifestyle, from healthy eating and nontoxic beauty to green cleaning, online and on Instagram.

How to Make Your Vision Your Embodied Reality

How to Make Your Vision Your Embodied Reality

We can dream about our ideal job or relationship. But we will only be dreaming.

Our dream won’t be real until we actually embody the vision. We have to take action, step into the vision, do instead of think.

But what if you have doubts? What if your body is resisting that next step? Your dream or vision may be scary or overwhelming to actually step into.

If you are experiencing any of the above, it’s likely that you are still operating on old software. Your brain and body are wired based on your past, not for your ideal future. And its likely your new dream isn’t real because the two don’t line up.

Or, you might be able to accomplish your dream through struggle and compensation, but feel exhausted and drained as a result.

My interactive W.E.L.L. Summit workshop addresses all of the above.

You will learn how to set and sustain whole self goals, keeping your mind, body and spirit in alignment as you envision your ideal reality.

You will learn the step by step process to rewire your brain and body for your future vision so that it occurs with ease, no fight, no compensation, just presence.

We have to create a new neural pathway that identifies a deliciously relaxed and confident you as part of your vision.

In order to accomplish this, you will learn incredible healing techniques, my personal blend of educational kinesiology, essential oils and the expressive arts. All of the above are near and dear to my heart as they have helped me heal and embody almost impossible realities again and again, starting as a mere infant.

Life has given me multiple opportunities to release a pattern from the past and embody a new reality. From my mom discovering my father’s affair 2 days before I was born, my parents’ divorce at 9 days old, bacterial spinal meningitis and going into septic shock at 5 ½ months old, watching my friend get hit by a car and die when I was 9 years old, and other traumas throughout the years, I have not only healed, but thrived far beyond expectation.

Early childhood trauma is closely related to our ability to take on more in our lives. These traumas create and alter our brain and body foundation and, as a result, our potential for success.

Thankfully I have had the tools to continually heal and step forward with grace.

Fast forward in my life to feeling at peace with my family, recovering from my feelings of abandonment, graduating at the top of my class, returning to my body and feeling empowered to help my friend pass to the other side, loving my job, and having multiple opportunities arrive with ease.

Not only have I experienced these blessings in my own life, but I have had the privilege and honor supporting and educating all ages as they experience similar, if not even more profound blessings in their lives.

It’s time to heal and step forward with relaxed confidence.

Join me at W.E.L.L. Summit 2016 to help your impossible vision become your embodied reality. See you there!

What Wellness Means to Josh Rosebrook

What wellness meansto me

JRThese days, many people are resonating with the lifestyle of wellness. It’s truly incredible to witness our culture awakening in a collective desire for mindful, healthy, empowered living.

But what does “wellness” really mean? How does wellness make a real impact in our lives in the same way that it inspires us?

There are books, people, brands, design aesthetics, Pinterest boards, Instagram photos, filters, fonts, color palettes, clothing styles, attitudes, foods and a plethora of memes that showcase, express, expose and sell this purported image of a spiritual and emotional experience offered as a lifestyle of wellness that we connect to. What wellness means and our relationship with it, is layered, personal and so much more than a marketing, lifestyle trend (of course): It’s our innate desire to connect, be and live healthy and happy.

What does living wellness mean to me most simply? Constant self-assessment. A continual checking-in, an exercising of my ability to acknowledge and act in alignment with what I know I need at any given moment.

This is what I ask myself and I encourage you to ask yourself too: What is best for me right now, no matter what anyone else might think? Ask yourself daily or several times a day; nothing is too big or too small— this is the constant checking-in, the self-assessment that leads to being true to yourself.

Wellness is being true to myself, asking myself what is right for me, regarding any situation, event or moment—this takes courage and self-awareness and many times, we seemingly disappoint others when we are being true to our highest needs. But really, we carry no responsibility for their choice of reaction to any of our decisions.

Twenty years ago, I would have called practicing my lifestyle of wellness as having “discipline.” Today, discipline is too strong of a word to describe wellness. Discipline can connote rigidity that doesn’t quite nurture our sensitivities enough. Living wellness can require a certain amount of self-discipline at times, but there is a deeper truth to remember: Everything is always totally ok and completely right, no matter what we do or don’t do. Here we absolve ALL pressure and resistance, and THAT is wellness.

Why Wellness Is The Critical Component Of A Career Change

Why Wellness Is The Critical Component Of A Career Change

Welcome speaker Jill Ozovek to the blog! Jill (CPC, ACC, ELI-MP)  is a Certified Professional Coach who works with millennial women on finding their dream job when all signs point to the impossible. Through highly tailored group work and one-on-one coaching sessions, Jill focuses on helping clients uncover what it is they want to do with the rest of their career, even when they walk into their first session with no earthly idea. She then helps them craft a plan to transition to the new career while keeping wellness and sanity top of mind.

As a former hiring manager at a large event production company, she has extensive experience with crafting resumes that will get you noticed, writing targeted cover letters to potential employers that clearly show why you’re the best fit for the position, using LinkedIn to your advantage, and navigating networking events. She also has extensive experience helping clients define, hone and communicate their professional narrative. For more info on your own career change, click here, or read on for her four reasons why wellness is a critical part of a career change.

Let’s be clear: There can be considerable stress in your life when you’re trying to find a new job, and that stress is magnified when you’re trying to change careers altogether! In the case of the latter, you’ve got to figure out what exactly your new career path IS for starters, and then you’ve got to craft a plan to transition yourself into that new career. This takes time, energy and oftentimes funds (through coaching, a resume writer, classes to bridge skill gaps, etc.).

For many of us during stressful times, keeping up with wellness is the first thing that falls by the wayside. Exercise becomes more and more intermittent and sometimes disappears altogether and greasy takeout while at your desk working on your resume becomes the norm. This can lead to more non-restful nights of sleep (salt and added sugar, sistah!), foggy mornings which precipitate needing more and more coffee and an overall heavy feeling as you go throughout your day.

Sound familiar?

While the scenarios I’m describing above are normal, they don’t have to be your normal. In this two part series, we’ll be talking about WHY keeping wellness top of mind is key and then next time, we’ll talk about HOW you can do it with some easy hacks that will make it totally doable for you.

So, why is wellness the critical component in any career change?

1. A Can-Do Mindset. On days when I’m feeling foggy, tired and downright not myself, I don’t have the same ‘world is my oyster’ expansive mindset I would otherwise have. Add in tons of salt and sugar-laced food, missing my daily meditation session and/or not exercising for a couple of days and forget it! How you treat your body- with the food you put in it, how you move it and how you connect with it emotionally- all matter for being in the right mindset to tackle the challenge of completely changing your career.

When I was in the process of changing my career, I felt that full throttle. During one lengthy part of the transition, I worked full time as an events contractor for a company in Manhattan. That meant I only had nights and weekends for my business to put processes in place, attract clients, network, hone my coaching skills and more. I made sure to bring my home-cooked lunch at least 4 days a week and I’d stop on my way home at a 6 p.m. Pilates class to switch my brain from events/logistical mode to biz building/strategy mode, which really helped. That, on top of my homemade lunches, encouraged my nighttime work sessions. It was daunting enough as it was; I didn’t need to feel lethargic and unfocused to boot!

In the midst of this, I injured my back and couldn’t walk for nearly a month. Now I understand it’s largely because of the stress I was putting on myself to ‘get this career change right.’ I had a lot riding on this after all, having left my well-paying corporate job for the unknown. So, as a result of the injury, I also started seeing a Alexander Technique and mindfulness coach, which brought the benefits of meditation and mindfulness into my life.

2. Stamina. The process of career change is a marathon, not a sprint. This can take several months and in some cases, years. Without a wellness plan in place that works for you, it is SO much easier to give up before you’ve really truly started. I help clients develop a wellness plan they can stick to in the beginning of our work together so that they have the building blocks and foundation upon which to grow and learn as they embark on their career change journey. There will be “up” days and “down” days and with your ideal wellness plan in place, the downs will feel less down. And of course no wellness plan is perfect and you may have off days, but because your baseline is wellness, a day ‘off’ every now and then is a treat and doesn’t feel so ‘off the horse’-esque.

3. Boundaries. If you’re working a couple of different jobs like I did while changing your career, wellness can help create boundaries with your day job. Now, I don’t know your specific situation as you’re sitting there reading this and I know some ‘day jobs’ are more demanding than others. What I’m going for is to encourage you to think about the fact that your wellness plan can help you create a boundary from your day job so that you can get to work on your career change. For me, I did those three 6pm pilates classes and on those three nights I did something for my new career after that, whether it was a listening to a webinar, attending an event or doing some quiet work. I made sure to take some nights off because, well, no one is a robot after all! Maybe after you’ve really looked at your day job it’s still tough for you to get out for a 6pm class, so maybe wellness happens in the morning, or maybe the career change stuff happens in the morning before work a couple of days a week! Even if you feel like your schedule is iron-clad and non-movable, there could be some workarounds.

4. The Right Kind of Productivity. A calmer and less frenetic “MUST GET EVERYTHING DONE NOW” frame of mind helps you focus on what’s truly important for your career change. You no longer will feel like you have to do 5 things on the night(s) you’ve set aside for the work, and instead will have a clearer sense for what’s actually important versus what is just ‘busy-work.’

With the clients I’ve worked with over the last few years, I’ve seen it all when it comes to wellness, and these are the four keys I emphasize focusing on when it comes to your career change. Think about how these intersect with your life and current situation and then next time, we’ll chat about HOW to actually do this so you’ve got some actionable advice to go on.

Full Moon AND Summer Solstice? A 5-Step, 15-Minute Practice to Plant Seeds of Intention and Get a Megaboost of Support from Nature

Full Moon + Summer Solstice-

Today is both the Summer Solstice and a full moon—a powerful combination that won’t happen again until 2062! That’s right! This conjunction of creative energy in nature is the perfect time to set some time aside for reflection and plant new seeds of intention in your life. Wondering how? We asked Sara DiVello, an acclaimed yoga teacher and best-selling author for a 15-minute practice to take advantage of today’s power.

1. Seek Solitude

Set aside some time for solitude. Maybe it’s a corner and a cup of tea at your home when you can find some quiet, maybe it’s a nearby greenspace, maybe it’s somewhere else just speaks to you. Wherever it is, silence your phone, set your timer for 5 minutes, and close your eyes.

2. Get Grounded

Take 3 deep breaths. On each inhale, consciously think of something that’s weighing on you—to-do lists, annoyances, expectations—and add a sigh on your exhale as you choose to let it go. Then segue into deep breathing. You can add a mantra—I like, “so hum,” (I am) in concert with your breath.

3. Where in the OM are you and what in the OM’s going on in your life?

Grab your journal, a notebook, or the nearest piece of paper. Spend 5 minutes journaling. What’s going in your life right now? If the saying, “Where attention goes, energy flows,” is true, where is your energy flowing right now? What’s soaking up your attention? Is it where you want it to be?

4. Cultivate Consciously

I often look to the wisdom of nature for guidance. I love to grow fruit, veggies, and herbs in my urban garden and right now is a time of abundant growth—little seedlings are getting huge and tiny little veggies are starting to bloom. This is THE season for growth outside and within. So… what do you want to grow in your life? What do you want to bring into or increase in your life? What do you want to nurture in your life? And what do you want to weed out? Write it allllllll down.

5. Set Your Intentions and Sow Your Seeds

You don’t have to do it all and you sure shouldn’t try to do it all right now. Set 3 goals for yourself over the summer. Make sure they’re clear and do-able. Write them down on a new sheet. “My Summer Intentions Are…”

In eastern/yogic thought, you’re not responsible for doing everything yourself. You’re just one human (one powerful, awesome human…but still just one little human), which is why eastern/yogic philosophy takes a friendlier more partnership-based approach. In keeping with this approach, after you set your goals, sit in quiet reflect for 3-5 minutes, palms up on your knees and commit to your intentions. Then ask the Universe to step in and meet you halfway. Again, this is a partnership so don’t be shy. Breath deeply, ask humbly, and let these intentions and sense of partnership settle into your bones. Gently open your eyes.

This is the very beginning of the work we’ll be doing in my “Where in the OM Am I 2.0: Taking the First Step to Your Most Fulfilling Life” workshop which I’m leading at the W.E.L.L. Summit in October. Starting this reflection now is a great way to “warm up” for the W.E.L.L. Summit, but remember too, that another key component of successful transitions and personal evolution is COMMUNITY. Seriously—it’s incredibly important to have support, guidance, mentorship, and a tribe who is equally committed to living this more-meaningful, more-conscious lifestyle in a world that may not “get you.” If you were at the Summit in November 2015 in Boston, you know exactly what I mean. And if you’re seeking a community like that, WELLcome home.

I’m passionate about this work, so comment below with any questions or thoughts! Happy Summer Solstice! Now go celebrate with a treat—for me, that would probably be coconut ice cream because nothing says summer more!

Book your trip and be sure to schedule it during the second week of July, so that you can experience not only the island, but also experience the Nantucket Yoga Festival

The Nantucket Yoga Festival brings together the very best yoga instructors, wellness experts, and healthy living guides for one truly inspiring weekend. Each year, festival workshops on Saturday and Sunday take place at Bartlett’s Ocean View Farm, Nantucket Island’s oldest and largest family-owned farm.  The classes will be held under tent, amidst the over 100 acres of flowers, herbs and vegetables, offering ocean views and fresh salt air, for a truly one-of-a kind experience.

Before or after workshops you can visit over 30 talented vendors. The festival marketplace will feature artists, clothing, jewelry, yoga wear and a wellness area offering massage, Reiki and Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis.

Kick off the weekend with the opening night celebration at the The Westmoor Club on Friday, July 8. Mix and mingle with the festival instructors. Enjoy a delicious dinner featuring local and organic ingredients lovingly prepared by chef Bruce Sacino paired with fresh pressed juices and organic and bio dynamic wines.

Opening night will feature New York Times best selling author Stephen Cope, breathtaking acro-yoga with the YogaSlackers and the truly transformational music of Jami Sieber.

While there may be other yoga festivals there is only one Nantucket. There is so much positive energy on and off the mat – it’s one festival you don’t want to miss.
